Preventing
Elder Abuse – Adult Protective Services
By
Michael A. Piekarz
Spectrum Staff Writer
Adult
Protective Services (APS) is dedicated to maintaining the health
and safety of elderly and dependent adults who are victims of abuse
or neglect.
APS is a state-mandated service program charged with investigating situations
involving elderly and dependent adults who are reported to be in danger due to
abuse, neglect, exploitation, or hazardous or unsafe living conditions.
The Department of Health and Human Services operates APS in Sacramento County.
Included in the APS areas of concern are physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect
by caretakers or others, self-neglect, financial abuse and emotional or verbal
abuse.
In addition to investigating abuse or neglect, APS social workers assist the
elderly and dependent population of Sacramento County in a variety of ways.
APS can provide 24-hour emergency response services and can act to mobilize emergency
personnel such as paramedics or law enforcement in high risk situations.
APS also provides secure referrals to county and community services such as public
health assessment and counseling services. The agency often acts as an advocate
in a variety of situations including dealing with landlords, doctors, hospitals,
treatment programs and other social services.
APS can arrange for direct services including but not limited to meal delivery,
transportation and immediate assistance with emergency situations.
Finally, APS acts to coordinate and consult with other social service providers
to ensure the best possible service for the client.
