Assistive
Technology Help – The AT Network
By
Michael A. Piekarz
Staff Writer
The
AT Network was created by the California Foundation for Independent
Living Centers in 2000 to meet the assistive technology needs of
Californians. It is coordinated by the Alliance for Technology Access
under contract with the California Department of Rehabilitation.
The purpose of the AT Network is to expand the accessibility of tools, resources
and technology that will help increase independence, improve personal productivity
and enhance the quality-of-life for all Californians.
The AT Network provides information, referrals, training and technical assistance
to those who share an interest in and a commitment to the practical and effective
use of technology by people with disabilities.
The AT Network provides an Assistive Technology Services directory, where seniors
and their families can find contact information and descriptions of hundreds
of assistive technology service providers and vendors.
The information available ranges from no-tech to high-tech on topics such as
blind and low vision, deaf and hard-of-hearing, mobility, home modifications,
aids for daily living, communication, education, health, recreation, transportation
and employment.
The AT Network provides contact information for community-based information and
referral specialists, called AT Advocates, who can assist consumers with a variety
of assistive-technology issues.
AT Advocates can be found through most of California and can be contacted through
the AT Network.
AT Advocates can provide information on assistive technology and provide referrals
to qualified professionals for assistive-technology evaluations, assessments
and training. They are also expert at finding resources, community outreach and
education.
