Locating Reputable Homecare Companies Gets Easier With Searchable Database

A nonprofit organization has launched the first comprehensive, searchable database of U.S. homecare companies that adhere to training and supervisory guidelines, as well as background checks for their employees.

The free database is located online at www.privatedutyhomecare.org.

The National Private Duty Association (NPDA) has launched a feature on its website that allows the public access to a searchable database of homecare companies that follow guidelines established by the nation’s leading homecare association.

The addition of this tool to the NPDA website should result in peace-of-mind for those seeking homecare for a loved one.

“While consumers have been able to locate lists of homecare companies online, what sets our database apart is the peace of mind it can provide,” said Sheila McMackin of Chicago, president of the NPDA.

“People that access our information can be sure the companies listed adhere to the principles of the NPDA. Caregivers in our member companies receive proper training, supervision and undergo extensive background checks before hiring.”

The database allows consumers to search by company name, city, state or ZIP code. If using the ZIP code feature, a radius can be selected to narrow or broaden the results.

“What many people don’t realize is that all caregivers and caregiving services are not equal,” said McMackin.

“Some companies may give the impression that they are responsible for their caregivers when, in effect, their caregivers are contractors, not employees. When problems occur, these companies wipe their hands of the entire situation.”

In today’s homecare industry, consumers will typically find certain levels of service providers: private duty companies, such as those that belong to the NPDA, who employ their caregivers and make sure they are screened, trained, bonded and insured.

Registries are similar to an employment agency in that they contract with caregivers to provide care to seniors; independent caregivers who contract directly with families to care for their older adults. To earn a listing on the NPDA website, a company must fall into the private duty category.
