Prescription Help – RXAssist.org and Volunteers in Health Care

By Spectrum Staff

RxAssist is a Web site with information, news and a database designed to help seniors find ways to get affordable or free medications.

The database includes information on pharmaceutical companies’ patient assistance programs or programs which provide free or low-cost medication to low-income patients. RxAssist was created by Volunteers in Health Care (VIH), a national, nonprofit resource center for health care programs working with the uninsured.

VIH staff provide daily updates to the Web site information, allowing users to search for medications by drug name — generic or brand name — or search by the pharmaceutical company. Detailed instructions are provided to assist users in locating medications easily and quickly.

The mission of RXAssist.org is to help safety net organizations care for those with no or limited insurance.

Staff members are available to assist organizations starting or operating programs providing medication or pharmacy assistance and are able to provide a national perspective on pharmaceutical access issues and strategies.

VIH and RxAssist.org are nationally-recognized as expert resources for safety net organizations, policymakers, clinicians and the media.

To access the RxAssist.org database, seniors simply need to visit either the “Patient” or “Provider Center” and use the database to search for needed medications.

If a needed medication is not in the database, it means that a patient assistance program does not currently exist for that medication, but information is available to allow users to contact pharmaceutical companies directly for assistance.

RxAssist.org is funded through private foundations, such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, through corporate sponsorships, such as our partnership with Express Scripts, and also from private donations. There is no charge to users.
